A card reader is a device that sits at or near a door and reads an access credential. It passes the credential to the access control panel. The panel decides whether to unlock the door. The credential can be a proximity card, a key fob, or a phone’s mobile credential.

A security company usually installs and maintains the reader. That company also manages the software behind it.

A commercial door service company will be able to troubleshoot the mechanics of the door that is controlled by the card reader system. Often, the door technician can determine if the cause of a malfunction is software or mechanical.

Who fixes card reader problems?

The reader controls door hardware like electric strikes, magnetic locks, REX sensors, and automatic door operators. A skilled auto door technician can correctly diagnose and service that hardware. But the security software sits behind a login. Security companies log in to add users and set their permissions. They also manage time schedules through that same software. Auto door technicians rarely hold those credentials.

That gap makes diagnosis tricky. A locked door might mean a hardware fault. The cause could just as easily be a software or permission error. Without the login, a technician cannot always tell which. The two companies often need to work the problem together.
